Fertility surgery

Most of the surgical interventions in infertility treatment are performed by laparoscopy. This means that the surgeon wil introduce a tube (laparoscope) into the umbilicus. The abdominal cavity is then inflated with CO2 gas. Doing so he creates a space to look and to work in. In the lower part of the abdomen he can introduce accesory instruments to perform the surgery. Typical laparoscopic interventions are : ovarian kystectomy, tubal surgery, treatment of uterine fibromas, treatment of endometriosis. The surgeons of the fertility center brussels often use the Co2 laser. With this energy source they can perfom the surgery without damage to the adjacent structures.

In exceptional cases a classic intervention with abdominal incision is the best option.

In case the pathology is situated within the uterine cavity a hysteroscopy is performed. A tube (hysteroscope) is introduced through the cervical canal and an additional insturment is passed through the scope to operate on the lesions

Practical info : your doctor will refer you to a colleague with specific experience in the field of gynaecological surgery. You will be given an appointment to discuss the arrangements for the operation and the planning.
The operation is carried out in the day surgery, for which you will receive a brochure describing how the surgery operates.
Your health must be assessed before any surgical intervention. A blood sample is always required to determine blood group and for a blood clotting test.
The risks of the operation are limited. There is a chance of infection (<1%). There is a chance of bleeding (bruise on the skin or internal bleeding) (<1%). There is a chance of accidentally perforating an adjacent organ such as the bladder or intestine (extremely rare). Very occasionally it may be necessary to interrupt the operation and proceed with a classic operation via abdominal incision.
