Safety in the lab

Laboratories that are allowed to work with human material are supervised by the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP). The Leuven lab is also ISO-certified. This quality label is re-assessed every three years.

Various measures are taken in the lab to prevent sperm/eggs or embryos from becoming contaminated with bacteria or viruses. Cells are always handled in a sealed room with purified air. Couples are regularly screened for infections.

Labelling: it is extremely important that each sample is correctly labelled with the name/date of birth of the man and/or woman from whom it was taken. This is re-checked each time the sample is handled. Before each procedure, the names of the man and woman on the receptacles are checked with the couple.

The Leuven University Fertility Center has invested in a digital control system named EVIDENCE. This system adds an additional check on top off the above menstioned system so that mistakes are at all times excluded.
