Removal of fibroids (myomas or fibromas)

Myomas are benign growths of muscular tissue mixed with connective tissue. They appear as more or less round swellings in the uterus. They can grow into the interior of the uterus and cause implantation problems (see also hysteroscopy). They can also grow in the muscle itself or develop more towards the outside of the uterus. Sometimes they cause complaints due to their position or size. Myomas can close up the Fallopian tube. Those myomas that could lead to complaints or fertility problems are removed by operative laparoscopy.
Exceptionally, myomas become so large or there are so many of them that they can no longer be removed via laparoscopy. A classic abdominal incision will then be appropriate.
